In Banking - 2 months ago

Investment banking as a financial institution, demands that those who are to be recruited as workers will have the desired skills to do their job very well. This is to satisfy their numerous customers who are counting on them for their able direction in this sphere of human endeavor.
Therefore, investment banking analysts are mostly recent undergraduates who work long hours and do a fair bit of grunt work. They work within specialized groups, but they may not always have control over the group to which they are assigned. Their work is such that they have to acquire good skills, which will help them execute their task judiciously. In order for them to be a success at the place of their work, they need such special skills which will reflect in their working place. Among other things, they will have the ability to work with excel spreadsheets, write macros in VBA, track and create weekly newsletters, keep agenda, compose prospectuses, get burgers, put in and retrieve pitch books from the copy center and also be able to answer client calls.
A good analyst also networks, observes and thinks. As a boost to their success, they are advised to have the knowledge of stocks, playing liars poker or following currencies. In addition, they are required to have the knowledge of Bloomberg, Word and PowerPoint. Other key success factors include: getting your job done well and without friction, doing your work promptly, asking for help where necessary, dressing neatly, not complaining, gossiping or whining, and learn how to use the web and library to do research. Also, bearing in mind that investment banking is a very noble work with much risks, and high reward as well, you will therefore be prepared for moments of frustration where you are over worked, and also times of enjoyment where everything works accordingly.
However, an analyst job is in fact the easiest way to break into mainstream investment banking jobs, especially for someone who just finished an undergraduate degree. It is also the best avenue to break into a very good field. Hence the return on investment from being a good analyst can be over 50 times what they actually pay you. Again, during the recruitment for an MBA program, analysts will be at a significant advantage over others without experience. Also, working as an analyst may be tiring, but it will offer the opportunity to learn the investment banking field and bond with people whom you will work with later. Some analysts leave the field after two years of experience to pursue their MBA program or other things that might interest them. But at times, this depends on the firm you are working with. Some firms have a very strict procedure of getting rid of you as an analyst, while others are mellower. But, it is a credit on the part of the analyst who must have distinguished themselves while doing their work.
Being an analyst is indeed rewarding, if you do not mind the demanding nature of the task.
