Budgeting is a very worthy exercise that helps one to manage his finances judiciously. For beginners in monetary concerns, this can be a very tasking exercise. And if you do not have the disciplines to guide you, it will spell doom for the financial life of such a person. For a novice in budgeting therefore, you therefore need to be directed on the basic rudimentary steps on how to make a successful budgeting. There are some materials that will help you in you budgeting, such as a ledger or cash book, red pen, blue or black pen, pencil and eraser, your copies of pay bills like bank statements, credit card statements and any other financial information you will like to keep record of.
Once you have gathered your materials, use your ledger register to make a three equal column tabulation, then register it into monthly expenses, yearly expenses and income sources. You will then list all your expenses according to the category they fall into. Once you have filled in your expenses and income, then add your total weekly amounts together. Make sure that you have to pay yourself an allowance each week. You will have to do this no matter how small. It helps to reward your work and keep you on track as well. Do not forget to record each of the expenses and write what it is used for and the amount of money that it costs you for the expenses.
At the lapse of each week, cash your paycheck and pay foot each bill according to the amount it is supposed. If your bill comes in slightly less one month, leave the money amount as a cushion for another month. On the other hand, if you find out that your monthly income is less than your expenses, it is time to take a look at your expenditures, and less how you spend on things that are not expedient.
If it has been hard for you in the past to pay your bills in the past with credit cards only to be mired further in debt, then this rudimentary budget exercise is a step in right direction. It is true that people can manage a monthly budget until a yearly expense creeps up on them, such as property taxes or homeowners insurance which may warrant them to pay for what they have not budgeted for. But for someone with this budget guideline, it will forestall such unhappy experiences or reduce its bad effect if it does take a toll on the person.
However, for one to achieve the best result in this, it demands that the person follow the guidelines and the exercise religiously. Make sure that you fill out your expenditures as soon as possible. Also cut down on your spending on frivolities and things that are not useful.
In all, seek the advice of a professional to educate you on other budgeting strategies and safe means.
