Deciding On The Best Credit Card Rewards Programs

In Credit Cards - Types of Cards - 15 months ago

Deciding on the best credit card rewards programs is fairly easy to do once one is armed with all the information that is freely available on the Internet. For those who want to leverage their available credit so that it is actually returning something to them rather than just a monthly credit card bill, going with a card featuring a quality rewards program can make a fair amount of sense.

That's because many of these programs feature significant incentives in the form of cash back on purchases, offers of free merchandise (after a significant amount of charge activity has occurred, usually), frequent flier miles on all of the major airlines (up to 250 of them these days) and a number of other different incentives, many of which might be a bit surprising to the average credit card user.

There are several different things to keep in mind when deciding on the best credit card rewards programs, though. For one, if no balance is going to be maintained on the card then such a program probably isn't the way to go. Most rewards given by the credit card issuer are predicated on a balance in carried on the card, which is generating interest, of course.

And with a credit card, it's all about the interest rate. This is how most every credit card issuer makes money from the person to whom the card has been issued. They also make money from merchants who accept credit cards, debt is generally small amount in comparison to the interest rate – which can often approach to rate a loan shark may charge, to be honest – that comes with certain kinds of credit cards.

Another factor for consideration when it comes to deciding on the best credit card rewards programs is understanding that it's going to take actual effort and a fair amount of time to derive many of the best rewards from using these kinds of credit cards. It's a good idea to look at the card as a kind of investment, which takes work to generate a return from. Expecting to be awarded free round-trip airline tickets after just a month's use is generally unrealistic, unless one is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars a month using the card.

Check the rules carefully when looking at just about any of the best credit card rewards programs, especially as they pertain to airline miles. All of the airlines look at these miles as liabilities, which they have to – by law – carry on their books as such. In the good old days, they would automatically extend any miles that were due to expire but that generally isn't the case these days. Look for a rewards program card that deals with this issue, before accepting it.

There are still a wealth of opportunities as they pertain to credit card rewards and the programs that come with them. For those with good credit and who understand how to best leverage that credit to their benefit, those programs can be a real way to derive far more reward from them than the issuer will earn in terms of interest rate. Check the Internet for the best programs and then researched each carefully before going with any particular one.
