Household Credit Card Debt Issues - Coming To Grips With Them

In Credit Cards - 15 months ago

Coming to grips with household credit card debt issues should be a priority of any person or head of a household these days. Certainly, consumer credit markets around the world have been paralyzed, in many instances, by the level of debt held in some households. This is especially so in this country, where average debt is probably 2 to 3 times more than the level of debt held just 50 years ago, in relative terms.

There are a number of things a head of household can do to manage such household credit card debt levels, though, and there are more than a few organizations that exist to help deal with it. The first thing that consumer credit users need to do is come up with a plan for paying down that debt and eventually eliminating it. Many people concerned about the level of debt are doing things like slowing down or cutting out unnecessary purchases, for one.

Another step that should be considered is to take the tax refund that may result upon filing of a tax return and apply it to paying off or at least paying down high interest credit cards. Rather than looking at that money as a way to go out and buy even more things, one should look at it as “found money” and put it to much better use. Eliminating household debt is certainly one way to do so.

In a way, excessive amounts of household credit card debt are extremely pernicious, not only to the particular household but to the economy in general. It's a fact that certain kinds of debt are desirable and even necessary, especially if one wants to maintain a quality credit history. However, credit scores suffer greatly when too much consumer credit debt is listed.

For example, having five or six different credit cards – not those from a department store but the most popular MasterCard or Visa types – actually lowers credit scores, especially when those cards are maxed out or near to being so. This is one way in which household credit card debt impacts people more than they know. If there is ever a situation where a credit increase is needed, a lower score could result in higher interest rates to get that credit, for one.

Fortunately, the message about household credit card debt seems to finally be sinking in, as many households have greatly increased borrowing activities. Whether or not this is due to a voluntary decision on the part of the household or whether banks and other lenders are just being stingy with credit remains to be seen. However, the fact that some sort of planned decrease in consumer credit borrowing is occurring, at this point, is probably a very good thing.

Managing credit is only good business, even if the credit involved has to do with a household and not a business. It is also a responsibility of each person having access to such credit, and failing to do so can harm people in ways they may not even understand until the day they are turned down for something that may be considered vital or has been a real dream for quite a while.
